Welcome Back 2019-2020

Welcome Back!
Posted on 08/01/2019
This has been our busiest summer ever with the construction process speeding along, new systems and wiring installed, hiring, new procedures developed to address the construction, and improvements throughout the district. Students and staff are now streaming back for Freshman Orientation in the High School, sports try-outs, and Marching Band and it’s great to have the hustle and bustle back!

I hope that you were able to have some fun with your children this summer! For me it was a summer of work but I got out to Colorado in June for my mother’s 90th birthday and also went on a few college visits with my rising senior. For those of you who have not had the “pleasure” of doing those visits yet, best of luck! It’s an entirely different ballgame than when my oldest two children went through the process years ago!

As members of our “Small School, Big Family” we all, parents, students, community members and staff alike, take great pride in the quality of the personalized educational experience provided by the Millis Public Schools. We aspire to provide an educational program that is prepares students for and is connected to the real-world experiences of a 21s t century global economy.

One of our goals is to communicate well with families. This Back-to-School Newsletter provides much information for you. We will continue to work on enhancing our website as well. And don’t forget to connect with us via Twitter (@nlgustafson, @millishigh, @millismiddle, and @cfbprincipal) as well as a Facebook page for each school.

The new Clyde Brown Elementary School is a beautiful and vibrant learning environment that supports our vision for the well-being and growth of students. Traffic patterns will be a bit different. Please see the map below and in the Clyde Brown section of this Newsletter. Cars from the Middle/High School will not be allowed in the Bus Lane at the back of the new Clyde Brown. Cars from Clyde Brown will, however, be able to exit through the Middle/High School. Chief Soffayer is once again providing police details to ensure that traffic flows safely as people get accustomed to the new configuration. We thank you for your patience with these temporary arrangements while the parking lot is constructed where the old building stood.

We are very pleased with all of the new staff members who will be joining us this year! Please check out their profiles in this newsletter. It is a very strong group with experience that will enhance our educational program! Also, Ms. Sandy LaBarge has been appointed as our new Transportation Director. Ms. LaBarge has been with us for 16 years as a bus driver, trainer and Coordinator of Transportation. Additionally, Mr. Jason Phelps is retiring at the end of September and will be replaced by Mr. Joe Russo. Mr. Russo has over 20 years of experience as a Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and coach of Principals through Harvard Graduate School of Education. He comes with rave reviews from other area school districts where he has served as Interim Principal since retirement. We will hold coffee hours for parents to meet him in October.

I am amazed at how talented our staff members are at meeting the diverse needs of all students. Our goal is to personalize students’ education so that each and every student thrives. Our continued focus on personalizing learning and developing 21s t century skills (a catch-all phrase for teamwork, creativity, thinking skills, communication skills, and “life and career” skills) enables all students to leave the Millis Public Schools with the skills and attributes they need for success in college, careers and life.

The new school year begins for teachers on Wednesday and Thursday, August 28-29t h for Professional Development to deepen and improve how we personalize learning, engage and empower students and create a culture that supports student well-being and learning. School starts for students on Tuesday, September 3rd, after Labor Day.

Millis is a wonderful community with many assets, the most precious of which are our children. The partnerships we enjoy with families and community organizations are crucial for our success. I enlist your support and welcome your input to help us ensure that students are engaged and grow to their fullest potentials. We are all very excited by the possibilities of this new school year! Please feel free to contact us!

With respect and appreciation for your support and partnership,
-Nancy Gustafson, Superintendent
